From 28th June to 2nd July the Lewisham Gateway project supported the local Deptford Green School with their work experience for 180 year 10 students organised by Construction Youth Trust, an organisation that aims to inspire young people about construction and the built environment through various educational programmes. 4 members of the Lewisham Gateway team volunteered 5 days to provide advice and encourage the next generation to consider a career in construction.
The students were set a brief to design and build a community centre for the local area and then spent the week developing their project in groups with tasks focusing on five key areas: architecture, project management, design management, engineering and marketing. Professionals in each role supported the students with their projects and answered any questions they had. Students then presented their projects on the Friday in front of a panel of judges, which allowed them to practice speaking in front of employers.
The students developed some great projects throughout the week and we hope to keep in contact with Deptford Green School for future engagement initiatives.
